Reggio Calabria - Scilla: “Visiting the Venice of the South”

Things to do

We will arrive at Scilla, an important tourist and seaside resort, in addition to being one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, a place full of myths and legends. We will visit the Ruffo Castle, a fortress located on a rocky outcrop over the Strait, churches and many valuable works that characterize the historic center, and Chianalea, an old and charming village, a fishing district with houses on the beach. Let's have lunch and taste the typical product: swordfish.  Departure for Reggio.   The city tour begins at the National Museum of Magna Graecia, where we can admire many exhibitions of Magna Graecia, including the famous Riace Bronzes. These are two great statues of Greek origin from the middle of the 5th century BC and represent one of the highlights of the sculptural production of all times, in addition to being the most important archaeological discovery of the last century. Continuing the visit admiring the Aragonese Castle, one of the main fortifications of the medieval city, we arrive at the Cathedral of Most Holy Mary of the Assumption, the largest religious building in Calabria. Passing to the coast, we meet with the archaeological sites; the Greek walls dating from the 4th century BC, form the foundation of the ancient city walls and the ruins of the Roman baths. From a naturalist point of view, the seaside is beautiful and full of exotic plants; many poets and writers, delighted with the wonderful view of the Strait, sang the coast. To end the visit, we can try a delicious gelato made in one of the most famous gelato shops in the city, located on the boardwalk.
